THE FARM BEHIND NARRAIN GRAIN

Narrain Grain is the social-media side of Narrain Pastoral Company, a sixth-generation Nixon family farming operation based at Oaklands in southern New South Wales.

What you see in the videos is the real operation — the crops, machinery, people, weather, logistics and inevitable breakdowns that go with farming at this scale.

THE FARM BEHIND NARRAIN GRAIN

WHO WE ARE

THE PEOPLE AND THE FARM BEHIND THE CHANNEL

Narrain Pastoral Company is a sixth-generation family farming business owned and run by Richard, James, Andrew, Tamara and Samantha Nixon. The farm is based around Oaklands, NSW, with cropping country extending across the surrounding district towards Savernake and Berrigan.

THE NIXON FAMILY

FAMILY OWNED. FAMILY RUN.

The owners of the business are Richard, James, Andrew, Tamara and Samantha Nixon. Richard has helped shape the operation over decades, while James and Andrew are heavily involved in the day-to-day farming, machinery and management of the business. Tamara handles much of the office and administration side of Narrain Pastoral Company, while Samantha works across the Narrain Grain media, marketing and merchandise side.

It is still very much a family farm. The roles overlap, the kids grow up around the operation, and when harvest, sowing or a weather window arrives, everyone ends up doing whatever job needs doing.

THE FARM

6,500–7,000 HECTARES AROUND OAKLANDS.

Today we crop roughly 6,500–7,000 hectares in and around the Oaklands district of southern New South Wales. The program changes with seasons, rotations and markets, but regular crops include wheat, barley, canola and irrigated corn.

The scale of the operation means cropping is only one part of the workload. There is spraying, fertiliser spreading, irrigation, grain drying and storage, road-train and truck logistics, earthworks, paddock regrading, machinery maintenance and a steady supply of repairs. Much of that work — not just the finished crop — is what ends up on Narrain Grain.

WHY NARRAIN GRAIN EXISTS

THE FARM CAME FIRST. THE CAMERAS CAME LATER.

Narrain Grain is not a separate staged farm built for social media. The farm came first; the cameras came later. The videos follow jobs that were happening anyway — sowing, harvest, machinery, trucks, breakdowns, workshop repairs, sheep work, field days and the decisions that come with farming through changing weather and markets.

The aim is to show modern Australian agriculture as it actually happens: good days, expensive days, long days and the occasional job that goes completely sideways. The channel has grown into a community of people interested in farming, machinery and the characters behind the operation, with new long-form videos published regularly alongside Facebook, Instagram and other social content.

The merchandise grew out of that community. Some gear carries the core Narrain Grain identity; other pieces come directly from machines, seasons, sayings and moments viewers recognise from the videos. Buying the gear helps support the media side while keeping the farm and the people behind it at the centre of the brand.

After six generations, the long-term objective is still uncomplicated: keep improving the farming business, look after the country, stay adaptable and hand something worthwhile to the next generation.
